A True Hidden Oasis in Undiscovered Morocco
It’s not often that you come across a place during your travels that is doing everything right, an experience that makes an ever lasting impression. Riad Dar al Hossoun is such a place, a breathtakingly beautiful oasis in un relatively undiscovered part of Morocco.
This boutique eco-lodge is located in the Berber city of Taroudant, lovingly called ‘little Marrakech’. Other than the similar well-preserved city walls, this city has a very different feel to it than trendy big sister Marrakech; amicable and authentic come to mind when describing this medieval town. Taroudant is based in the Souss Valley, fringed by palm- and orange trees and surrounded by snow capped Atlas mountains, as you can imagine, those elements make for quite the backdrop.
Just outside of this small, still undiscovered city, you will find Dar al Hossoun; a riad set in a stunning garden. Close to 1000 different species of plants from all over the world decorate the spacious courtyards, including an exquisite sunken garden to wander around in.
The hotel consists of ten individually styled rooms and suites. The tasteful rooms are spacious and comfortable, decorated with local artefacts and handicrafts from travels around the world. Many of the bathrooms have garden views while maintaining the required privacy.
Two seperate pools, one of them 30 meters long, offer plenty of opportunity to cool off on a hot summer’s day. There is a small spa with a traditional hammam on site, offering a wide variety of treatments with natural products.
If whether permits, excellent meals are served in the romantically lit gardens. Most vegetables come from the hotel’s own organic garden, located a few blocks away. Dietary requirements can be catered for and the staff is very personal and attentive.
This botanical lodge takes sustainability seriously; all structures are built with locally acquired materials and techniques. The water used is recycled into the exotic garden and the riad is working with, and promoting, local craftsmen.
During your stay at Dar al Hossoun you will be sharing the oasis with a bunch of loving dogs, cats, peacocks, chameleons and frogs, the original inhabitants of this garden of eden. Many of them have been saved by owner Ollivier, whose big heart has kept many animals off the streets.
It’s hard to imagine but if you can get yourself to leave this little paradise, a variety of day trips can be arranged, such as visits to the local market, taroudant and the palm tree valley for a Berber lunch.
If you are looking for a sustainable getaway that shows you an authentic side of Morocco while looking after your wellbeing and caring for the surroundings, we highly recommend Dar al Hossoun.
